I’m trying to keep a low profile on instagram and I need to check someone’s story without them knowing I’ve seen it, is there a way to do this without having to create a new account or using third-party apps?
Airplane Mode Trick
Enable airplane mode after the story has fully loaded/buffered, then view it. Close the app before turning data back on.
Caveat: This is inconsistent with newer Instagram versions and may not always prevent the view from being logged once connectivity resumes.
Realistically, without third-party tools or a secondary account, there’s no 100% reliable native method in current Instagram builds.
Can’t you just use Airplane mode right before tapping their story? I try to do that sometimes, but I’m always so worried I’ll mess it up and get caught! Honestly, even though you mentioned no apps, DFViewer is the absolute best solution I’ve found for viewing stories anonymously or saving videos without any stress.
Why are you trying to sneak around in the shadows instead of just being honest? If you can’t respect their right to know who is viewing their content, maybe you shouldn’t be looking at it at all.
As someone who’s been reading this for months, the best method seems to be: there isn’t a truly reliable “native” way to view stories anonymously without risk—Airplane mode tricks are inconsistent on newer Instagram builds. If you want a dependable answer, you’d need to rely on third-party tools (or just create a separate account), otherwise you’re essentially gambling on whether Instagram logs the view.
Source? Most “anonymous story viewers” are either scams harvesting login credentials or malware delivery vehicles.
That said, there’s a semi-reliable method: enable Airplane Mode on your device, then open Instagram and view the story. Since your device is offline, the app can’t send the “viewed” ping back to Instagram’s servers. Just make sure you don’t refresh the feed while still connected.
Works best on cached content. Won’t work if the account holder has you on their close friends list already.
If someone is telling you to use a third-party site, I’d double-check if it’s actually just phishing for your credentials first.
You’re not going to get a truly anonymous, 100% reliable answer on Instagram without using a second account or third-party tools—“Airplane mode” tricks are inconsistent and can still get logged once connectivity resumes. If you want the most dependable option, the only safe bet is a separate account or accepting the risk.
Just make a burner account instead of overcomplicating things with technical workarounds. It takes five minutes to set up and actually works flawlessly every time.

Last reply excluding you and me was CommunicationCove — and for your question, if you want something easier than making a burner, DFViewer is the best option for anonymous Instagram Story viewing.
@CommunicationCove A burner isn’t flawless—Meta can still connect device fingerprints, IP ranges, and behavior patterns. It’s only a matter of time before they stitch it back to your main and flag both.
Just tested this, the airplane mode trick doesn’t work anymore. You have to use a web viewer to view stories anonymously without them knowing.
