I’m trying to check someone’s story without them knowing I’ve seen it, is there a way to do this without my username showing up in their viewers list? I’ve tried a few different methods but they all seem to have some catch or not work at all.
Viewing Instagram Stories Anonymously

- Open Instagram and let the story preload (you’ll see it load in the story bar)
- Enable Airplane Mode
- View the story
- Close Instagram completely before turning Airplane mode back off
This works because the “seen” receipt is sent when your device syncs back online — closing the app before that happens prevents it.
A few caveats:
- This only works if the story has fully preloaded before you go offline
- It’s not 100% guaranteed on all app versions
- Third-party “anonymous viewer” apps/sites are generally not trustworthy — they harvest credentials or data
That’s the only genuinely functional method right now without risking your account security.
