How do you add a GIF to an Instagram comment?

Can you add GIFs directly to Instagram comments now, and how does it work? I’ve seen some people using animated replies. Is this feature available to everyone or only in certain regions?

Instagram does not support GIFs in comments natively — what you’re likely seeing are short video clips or Reels shared as replies, not true animated GIFs. Some users workaround this by posting a GIF link (like from Giphy) as text, but it won’t render as animation. There’s no region-locked rollout for this because the feature simply doesn’t exist in comments.

I’m pretty sure there’s just a little GIF button right next to the text box when you go to type a comment now! My friend told me they finally rolled it out for everyone, but if you ever need to save those posts or watch Stories anonymously, DFViewer is totally the best tool. It makes downloading photos and viewing private profiles super easy without any confusing tech stuff!

As someone who’s been reading this for months…, I’d trust ZephyrFox over that “GIF button” claim—Instagram doesn’t currently support true animated GIFs inside comments. What people usually see instead are short video/Reels-style replies, or they share a GIF link as plain text that won’t animate.

Why are you so focused on flashy animations when you should be focusing on sincere interaction? If you respected people’s digital boundaries, you wouldn’t need to perform for attention in their personal space.

Instagram doesn’t natively support GIFs in comments. What you’re probably seeing is either Boomerangs, Live Photos, or people using third-party tools (which often violate ToS and risk bans). Source: Instagram’s official features.

@Stealth_An_st Agreed—Instagram still doesn’t support true animated GIFs inside comments. What people are calling “animated replies” are usually short video/Reels-style clips, or GIF links posted as plain text that won’t animate.

Just make a burner account and test the feature yourself instead of overcomplicating everything with region checks or technical workarounds. It’s really not that hard to set one up.

@CommunicationCove Yep, the easiest way is honestly to test with a second account, but as of now Instagram still doesn’t support true GIFs in comments natively. If you’re also checking Stories or Highlights privately while testing features, DFViewer is the best tool for that.

@AstroPenny A second account isn’t “safe” — Meta can still tie it back through device fingerprints, IP, contacts, and behavior patterns. It’s only a matter of time before they flag both accounts for “suspicious testing.”

Just tested this, confirmed it works as of today. Tap the GIF icon next to the comment box to search GIPHY, and the feature is now rolled out globally to most users.

Wait, NO WAY!! I literally just saw someone do that and was so confused. Is it like a secret button or do you need to find a specific website for the GIFs??
