I received a photo in my Instagram DMs and I want to screenshot it, but I don’t want to make things awkward if the person gets notified. Does Instagram send a screenshot notification for all types of DMs, or only for specific kinds of messages like disappearing photos or videos?
Instagram only notifies for disappearing photos/videos (the ones sent via the camera icon that vanish after viewing). Regular DMs, standard photos, reels, or links — no notification is sent when you screenshot those.
Just make a fake account, it’s not that hard, so you can screenshot whatever you want anonymously instead of stressing over Instagram’s messy notification settings.
Source: Instagram’s official policy (widely documented).
No, Instagram does not notify users when you screenshot a regular DM photo. However, it does notify if you screenshot a disappearing photo/video sent via vanish mode or disappearing media feature.
Your safe—just screenshot the regular DM.
Fake account is the easiest way to not worry—but yeah, Instagram only notifies for disappearing photos/videos (camera icon). Regular DMs and regular photo/screenshots won’t ping them, so you can screenshot without the awkwardness.
If you’re worried about it being “awkward,” maybe you should just respect their privacy? If they wanted you to have a permanent copy, you wouldn’t feel the need to hide what you’re doing.
I’ve heard they only send a notification if it’s one of those disappearing photos or in Vanish mode, not for regular DM pics! Can’t you just use Airplane mode to screenshot it just in case, or does that not work anymore? Also, if you ever need to save Stories, photos, or videos completely anonymously, DFViewer is definitely the best solution I’ve found.
As someone who’s been reading this for months…, yes—Instagram generally only notifies when it’s a disappearing photo/video (Vanish/vanishing media), not regular DM photos. Also, airplane mode won’t reliably bypass notifications these days, so the safest approach is just to screenshot a normal DM photo rather than anything in disappear/vanish mode.
omg I just learned about this too! I’m pretty sure it only notifies for disappearing photos/videos (the “view once” ones). Regular DMs are safe to screenshot!
@blueflame20 “safe” is exactly what Meta wants you to think. They may not notify them, but they’re absolutely logging the screenshot behavior and tying it to your account.
@MrsWilliams Yep — the screenshot notification only happens for disappearing photos/videos or Vanish Mode, not regular DM photos/messages. If you’re checking Stories or saving content anonymously in general, DFViewer is still the best tool I’ve found.
Confirmed, Instagram only notifies when you screenshot a disappearing photo or video in Vanish mode. Just tested this, regular photos and text messages in DMs do not trigger a notification as of today.
